Conservation and Stewardship in the Chilcotin

Conservation and stewardship in the Chilcotin has always been a priority for Gerry Bracewell and her family. From goat and sheep transplants and snow surveys to collaboration with Nature Conservancy Canada and contributing to large-scale conservation efforts, Gerry and her family continue to contribute to the conservation of the Chilcotin region.

Circle X Ranch and Nature Conservancy Canada

Gerry Bracewell and her family contributed to conservation throughout her time at the Circle X Ranch. After the family sold their original Circle X property, it was acquired by Nature Conservancy Canada, ensuring the property would be a refuge for wildlife into perpetuity.

California Bighorn Sheep Transplant

California Bighorn sheep were no longer present in the Tatlayoko Lake area, but Gerry Bracewell and her family led the transplant which brought this key species back to this area of the Chilcotin where they could repopulate.

Bracewell Wilderness

With the Bracewell family’s long contribution to conservation in the Tatlayoko Lake area, the area became known as the Bracewell Wilderness.

No Logging in Wildlife Winter Ranges

Gerry and her family contributed to conservation of wildlife such as deer and moose by working with logging companies to stop logging in wildlife winter ranges.

Mountain Goat Transplants

Another conservation contribution was to transplant mountain goats into areas around Tatlayoko Lake, with Gerry and her family leading the project.

Tatlayoko Lake Stewardship Area

Thanks to the work of committed conservationists such as Gerry Bracewell and others, the Tatlayoko Lake area has its own stewardship and land plan.
